 Position Summary

We are seeking an exceptional Aspen A1PE Developer to join our technical team in London as a Technical Lead. This pivotal role focuses on designing and implementing scalable, high-performance web-based applications on the Aspen A1PE Platform that drive manufacturing excellence in the pharmaceutical industry. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in HTML, JavaScript, and SQL with a comprehensive understanding of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) processes, and Historian applications.

As an Aspen A1PE Developer and Technical Lead, you'll serve as the technical architect responsible for building sophisticated applications that transform how pharmaceutical manufacturing operations are monitored, controlled, and optimized. This position requires someone who can bridge the gap between business requirements and technical solutions, translating complex manufacturing processes into intuitive, performant applications that operators and engineers rely on daily.

Your expertise with the Aspen A1PE Platform will be complemented by strong domain knowledge in pharmaceutical manufacturing, data models, and regulatory compliance requirements. You'll collaborate closely with Product Owners, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to establish product roadmaps, refine backlog items, and deliver solutions that meet stringent quality and performance standards.

Technical Leadership and Platform Development

As the Technical Lead, you'll design and implement scalable, high-performance HTML and JavaScript-based applications on the Aspen A1PE Platform. Your architectural decisions will shape how manufacturing data is presented, analyzed, and acted upon by users across the organization. You'll establish coding standards, development best practices, and architectural patterns that ensure application maintainability, performance, and scalability.

Your development work encompasses creating responsive web interfaces that display real-time manufacturing data, building custom dashboards and visualizations for production monitoring, implementing interactive reporting tools that provide actionable insights, developing workflow automation features that streamline operations, and integrating with historian systems to access time-series manufacturing data.

Leading by example, you'll write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code that serves as a model for the development team. Your technical leadership extends to conducting code reviews, mentoring junior developers, establishing development standards and guidelines, evaluating new technologies and frameworks, and driving continuous improvement in development practices.

Performance optimization represents a critical aspect of your role. You'll ensure applications respond quickly even when processing large datasets, implement efficient data retrieval and caching strategies, optimize JavaScript code for browser performance, minimize network latency through smart architecture, and leverage asynchronous processing where appropriate.

Process Optimization and Business Collaboration

Collaborating with Product Owners and stakeholders to establish and refine backlog items ensures development efforts align with business priorities. You'll participate in requirements gathering sessions, translate business needs into technical user stories, estimate effort and complexity for development tasks, prioritize backlog items based on value and dependencies, and provide technical input during sprint planning.

Your process optimization responsibilities extend beyond software development to understanding and improving manufacturing processes themselves. You'll analyze existing workflows to identify automation opportunities, recommend process improvements based on technology capabilities, design solutions that eliminate manual data entry and reduce errors, implement best practices from pharmaceutical manufacturing standards, and ensure applications support lean manufacturing principles.

Working directly with onsite stakeholders, you'll gather detailed requirements through workshops and interviews, present technical solutions and demonstrate prototypes, collect user feedback and iterate on designs, provide training and support for new application features, and build strong relationships that facilitate effective collaboration.

Domain Expertise and Regulatory Compliance

Developing a strong understanding of the pharmaceutical domain, data models, and regulatory requirements is essential for creating compliant, effective solutions. You'll gain expertise in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes including batch production, continuous manufacturing, and quality control procedures. Your understanding will encompass material management and genealogy tracking, equipment integration and automation, environmental monitoring and controls, and product lifecycle management.

Regulatory compliance knowledge guides your development approach. You'll ensure applications support FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records and signatures, implement audit trails that track all data changes and user actions, design solutions that maintain data integrity and prevent unauthorized modifications, support validation activities by providing necessary documentation, and stay current with evolving regulatory guidance affecting manufacturing systems.

Data model expertise enables you to design efficient database structures and queries. You'll understand manufacturing data hierarchies and relationships, design normalized database schemas that prevent data redundancy, create efficient indexes to optimize query performance, implement data validation rules that ensure data quality, and establish data retention policies that balance performance with compliance requirements.

MES/MOM Platform Development and Integration

Your experience with MES and MOM processes, preferably Aspen A1PE or similar platforms like Siemens Opcenter and UADM, positions you to build integrated manufacturing solutions. You'll develop production scheduling and tracking applications, create material management and inventory interfaces, implement quality management and deviation handling systems, build equipment integration and monitoring solutions, and design KPI dashboards for operational visibility.

Integration with Historian applications such as Aspen IP21, OSI PI, GE Proficy, or similar platforms enables time-series data analysis and trending. You'll develop historian data retrieval interfaces using appropriate APIs, create trending and charting visualizations for process parameters, implement statistical analysis features for process capability studies, build alarm and event analysis tools, and design data export functionality for further analysis in external tools.

Your platform expertise extends to understanding Aspen A1PE architecture and capabilities, configuring A1PE modules and features to meet requirements, troubleshooting platform-specific issues and performance bottlenecks, staying current with platform updates and new feature releases, and recommending platform enhancements based on user needs.

Full-Stack Web Development Excellence

Deep understanding of web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript empowers you to build sophisticated user interfaces. You'll create responsive layouts that work across devices and screen sizes, implement modern CSS frameworks and styling approaches, develop interactive JavaScript components using contemporary frameworks, leverage TypeScript for type-safe code and improved maintainability, and ensure cross-browser compatibility and accessibility standards.

Your SQL database scripting expertise with 3+ years of hands-on experience enables complex data operations. You'll write efficient queries to retrieve manufacturing data, develop stored procedures for business logic execution, create views and materialized views for reporting, optimize database performance through indexing and query tuning, and implement data transformation and aggregation logic.

Reporting development capabilities allow you to create comprehensive reporting solutions. You'll design parameterized reports that users can customize, implement drill-down functionality for detailed data analysis, create scheduled reports that automatically generate and distribute, develop export functionality to various formats (PDF, Excel, CSV), and ensure report performance even with large datasets.

Agile Development and DevOps Practices

Prior experience working in Agile methodologies such as Scrum positions you to thrive in iterative development environments. You'll participate actively in all Scrum ceremonies including daily standups, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives. Your contributions help the team maintain velocity, identify impediments, and continuously improve processes.

Experience with modern development tools and DevOps practices streamlines delivery. Required Qualifications and Experience

Professional Experience Requirements

A minimum of 8 years of hands-on software development experience with HTML and JavaScript demonstrates your technical maturity and breadth of experience. Experience in MES/MOM processes, preferably Aspen A1PE or similar platforms like Siemens Opcenter and UADM, is essential. You should demonstrate hands-on configuration and development experience, understanding of manufacturing operations workflows, familiarity with industry standards and best practices, and ability to translate manufacturing requirements into technical solutions.

Previous experience with MES and Historian applications, with Aspen IP21 preferred or similar platforms like OSI PI and GE Proficy, enables you to leverage time-series data effectively.
