ROLE OVERVIEW

The Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack is a pivotal technical leadership role responsible for leading and overseeing the software engineering function in developing, releasing, and maintaining software applications and systems according to business needs. As a technical leader, you will work closely with other software engineers, ensuring technical growth and product quality through best engineering practices while driving innovation in Pattern's eCommerce acceleration platform.

This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, requiring you to architect and build scalable full-stack solutions while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating across functional teams. You'll be at the forefront of developing cutting-edge features that process 46+ trillion data points and serve hundreds of global brands across 60+ marketplaces worldwide.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership & Development

Lead software engineers to deliver innovative, high-quality products on a foundation of architectural and engineering excellence. You'll be responsible for setting technical direction, making architectural decisions, and ensuring that code quality standards are maintained across the team. This includes conducting code reviews, establishing coding standards, and promoting best practices in software development.

Guide software engineers through planning, designing, coding, delivery, and support, driving the day-to-day technical decisions that shape product development. You'll mentor team members on technical approaches, help them overcome technical challenges, and ensure they have the skills and knowledge needed to deliver exceptional work. Your guidance will help junior engineers grow into senior contributors while maintaining high standards of code quality and system design.

Own and continually improve the throughput and stability of product delivery and application lifecycle, in partnership with product and program management. This includes optimizing development workflows, implementing continuous integration and deployment practices, reducing technical debt, and ensuring system reliability and performance meet business requirements.

Distill complex and ambiguous situations into actionable plans for your team. You'll break down high-level requirements into concrete technical tasks, identify potential risks and dependencies, and create clear roadmaps that enable your team to execute efficiently. Your ability to navigate uncertainty and provide clarity will be crucial to team success.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work cross-functionally with other roles and business teams to define, deliver, and support software and services. You'll collaborate closely with product managers to understand business requirements, work with designers to create exceptional user experiences, partner with data scientists to integrate machine learning models, and coordinate with DevOps teams to ensure smooth deployments and operations.

Communicate and collaborate internally and with partners on technical details. You'll translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, participate in architecture review meetings, document technical decisions and system designs, and serve as a technical point of contact for partner integrations and API development.

Experience working with teams across different time-zones and countries. Pattern operates globally, and you'll collaborate with engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders across multiple continents. Strong asynchronous communication skills and cultural awareness are essential for success in this distributed environment.

Full-Stack Development

Design and implement scalable backend services using Node.js, building RESTful APIs, microservices architectures, and event-driven systems that can handle high-volume traffic and process massive amounts of eCommerce data efficiently. You'll work with relational and NoSQL databases to design optimal data models that support complex business logic while maintaining performance at scale.

Develop responsive and intuitive frontend applications using React and modern JavaScript frameworks. You'll create component-based architectures, implement state management solutions, optimize frontend performance, and ensure excellent user experiences across devices and browsers. Your frontend work will directly impact how users interact with Pattern's platform daily.

Integrate cloud technologies and services to build resilient, scalable applications. Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform is preferred, including services for compute, storage, messaging, and serverless architectures. You'll design systems that can scale elastically to meet demand while optimizing for cost efficiency.

Implement database design and data modeling solutions that support complex business requirements. You'll work with both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis) to design schemas, optimize queries, implement caching strategies, and ensure data integrity across distributed systems.

Quality Assurance & Best Practices

Establish and maintain high standards for code quality, including comprehensive unit testing, integration testing, and end-to-end testing. You'll promote test-driven development practices, implement automated testing frameworks, and ensure adequate test coverage across the codebase.

Drive architectural excellence through design pattern implementation, adherence to SOLID principles, and promotion of clean code practices. Your deep understanding of design patterns and architectural styles will guide technical decisions and ensure maintainable, extensible systems.

Champion agile software development practices, including sprint planning, daily standups, retrospectives, and continuous improvement. You'll help the team operate efficiently within an agile framework while maintaining flexibility to adapt processes as needed.

Mentorship & Talent Development

Train and develop top engineering talent by providing regular feedback, conducting technical coaching sessions, sharing knowledge through documentation and presentations, and creating opportunities for junior engineers to take on challenging work with appropriate support. Your mentorship will be crucial in building a strong, capable engineering team.

Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation, encouraging team members to explore new technologies, attend conferences, contribute to open-source projects, and stay current with industry trends. You'll lead by example, demonstrating curiosity and commitment to technical growth.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or applicable engineering or science field. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered for candidates with exceptional technical skills and proven track records.

6+ years of software development experience with demonstrated progression in technical responsibility and complexity. You should have a strong portfolio of completed projects that showcase your ability to design, build, and maintain production software systems.

Preferred 3+ years of proven work experience in Node.js development and ReactJS. You should be comfortable building complex backend services with Node.js, including experience with Express.js or similar frameworks, asynchronous programming, event loops, and Node.js ecosystem tools and libraries. For React, you should have experience with modern React patterns including hooks, context API, and component lifecycle management.

Technical Skills

Broad understanding of coding and programming languages including JavaScript/TypeScript, with ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code. While Node.js and React are primary technologies, you should be comfortable learning new languages and frameworks as needed.

Experience with database design and data modeling, including schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and understanding of database transactions, ACID properties, and CAP theorem implications for distributed systems.

Knowledge of and experience with relational and NoSQL databases. For relational databases, you should understand SQL, normalization, joins, and query optimization. For NoSQL databases, you should understand document stores, key-value stores, and when to use different database paradigms.

Extensive knowledge of the software development process and corresponding technologies, including version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), infrastructure as code, monitoring and logging, and deployment strategies including blue-green deployments and canary releases.

Excellent understanding of design patterns and architectural styles, including MVC, microservices, event-driven architecture, CQRS, and domain-driven design. You should know when to apply different patterns and understand the trade-offs involved.

Proficient knowledge of the operation and development designs of agile software, including Scrum, Kanban, user stories, sprint planning, estimation techniques, and continuous delivery practices.

Exposure to cloud technology is preferred, particularly AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, and CloudFormation. Experience with other cloud providers like Azure or GCP is also valuable.

Additional Technical Skills (Strong Plus)

Go (Golang): Experience building high-performance services with Go, understanding concurrency patterns, channels, and goroutines.

Ruby: Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or other Ruby frameworks for rapid application development.

TypeScript: Strong typing for JavaScript applications, interfaces, generics, and type safety across full-stack applications.

Modern frontend tooling: Webpack, Babel, ESLint, Prettier, and other build and development tools.

GraphQL: Experience designing and implementing GraphQL APIs as an alternative to REST.

Message queues and streaming: Experience with RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, or AWS Kinesis for event-driven architectures.

Container orchestration: Kubernetes or ECS for managing containerized applications at scale.

Monitoring and observability: Experience with tools like DataDog, New Relic, Splunk, or ELK stack for application monitoring, logging, and alerting.

LOCATION & WORK ENVIRONMENT
