ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shopify Developer to join our dynamic eCommerce team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience working with Shopify, along with a strong background in web development, front-end technologies, and eCommerce best practices.
As a Shopify Developer at Pattern, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining Shopify-based online stores for global brands, ensuring they provide exceptional user experiences, high performance, and seamless functionality. You'll work at the intersection of design, technology, and commerce, creating digital storefronts that drive conversions, enhance brand presence, and deliver measurable business results.
This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge Shopify Plus features, implement headless commerce architectures, and build custom solutions that serve some of the world's most recognized brands. You'll collaborate with designers, product managers, and marketing teams to translate business requirements into beautiful, functional eCommerce experiences that drive partner success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Shopify Plus Development & Advanced Features
Lead Shopify Plus implementations for enterprise-level clients, leveraging advanced features including wholesale channels, multistore management, automation flows, and custom checkout experiences. You'll architect scalable solutions that meet the complex needs of high-volume merchants.
Implement Shopify Flow automations to streamline business processes, reduce manual work, and improve operational efficiency. You'll create custom workflows for inventory management, order processing, customer segmentation, loyalty programs, and marketing automation.
Develop and optimize Scripts using Shopify Scripts Editor for dynamic pricing, shipping calculations, payment customization, and promotional campaigns. You'll ensure these scripts are performant and maintainable while delivering complex business logic.
Configure and customize Shopify Plus features including Launchpad for scheduled campaigns, organization management for multi-store operations, and API rate limit optimization for high-traffic stores.
Custom Theme Development & Design
Build and maintain custom Shopify themes from scratch using Liquid templating language, ensuring pixel-perfect designs that match brand guidelines while maintaining flexibility and scalability. You'll create reusable theme components and sections that empower merchants to customize their stores.
Develop responsive, mobile-first designs that provide exceptional user experiences across all devices and screen sizes. You'll implement modern CSS techniques, animations, and interactions that enhance engagement while maintaining fast load times.
Create custom sections and blocks that enable flexible page building, allowing marketing teams to construct landing pages, promotional campaigns, and content-rich experiences without developer intervention.
Implement theme architecture best practices including proper file organization, code modularity, documentation, and adherence to Shopify's theme development standards for performance and maintainability.
Store Build, Redesign & Migration
Lead comprehensive store builds from initial setup through launch, including store configuration, theme development, app integration, product setup, collection organization, navigation structure, and payment/shipping configuration.
Execute complete store redesigns that modernize brand presence, improve user experience, increase conversion rates, and implement current eCommerce best practices while ensuring smooth transitions with minimal disruption to business operations.
Manage complex store migrations from other platforms (WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, custom solutions) to Shopify, ensuring complete data transfer including products, customers, orders, content, and SEO preservation. You'll develop migration strategies that minimize downtime and maintain data integrity.
Perform checkout upgrades implementing Shopify's extensible checkout, custom checkout experiences, post-purchase upsells, and conversion optimization features that increase average order value and reduce cart abandonment.
App Integration & Custom Development
Integrate third-party applications from the Shopify App Store including marketing tools, inventory management systems, customer service platforms, analytics solutions, and specialized functionality that extends store capabilities.
Develop custom Shopify apps using Shopify's API, webhooks, and app development framework to create bespoke functionality that addresses unique business requirements not available through existing apps.
Build API integrations connecting Shopify stores with external systems including ERPs, CRMs, warehouse management systems, marketing automation platforms, and custom internal tools, ensuring seamless data flow across business operations.
Implement headless commerce architectures using Shopify's Storefront API, enabling custom frontend experiences built with React, Vue, or other modern JavaScript frameworks while leveraging Shopify's robust backend infrastructure.
Product & Collection Management
Develop efficient product and collection setup processes including bulk import/export workflows, product data optimization, variant management, metafield implementation, and structured data for SEO.
Implement advanced filtering and search functionality using Shopify's native features, third-party apps, or custom development to help customers find products quickly and efficiently.
Create dynamic collection logic using automated collections, manual curation, and custom algorithms that ensure products are properly categorized and discoverable based on business rules.
Optimize product pages for conversion including compelling layouts, high-quality media galleries, detailed descriptions, customer reviews, related products, and trust signals that drive purchase decisions.
eCommerce Best Practices & Optimization
Implement conversion rate optimization (CRO) strategies including A/B testing, user behavior analysis, checkout optimization, cart abandonment reduction, and persuasive design elements that increase sales.
Apply eCommerce UX best practices including intuitive navigation, clear calls-to-action, streamlined checkout processes, mobile optimization, and accessibility standards that create frictionless shopping experiences.
Optimize for search engine visibility implementing technical SEO, structured data markup, fast page loads, mobile-first indexing, and content optimization that improves organic search rankings.
Ensure compliance with eCommerce regulations including GDPR, CCPA, ADA accessibility standards, and payment card industry (PCI) requirements, protecting both businesses and customers.
Performance Optimization
Conduct comprehensive performance audits using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, WebPageTest, and Shopify's built-in analytics to identify bottlenecks and optimization opportunities.
Optimize site speed and Core Web Vitals through image optimization, lazy loading, code minification, efficient asset delivery, CDN configuration, and elimination of render-blocking resources.
Implement caching strategies and performance best practices that reduce server response times, improve time-to-interactive, and create snappy user experiences even under high traffic conditions.
Monitor and optimize app performance impact, ensuring third-party integrations don't negatively affect store speed, and implementing asynchronous loading where appropriate.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
Debug complex technical issues across themes, apps, checkout processes, and integrations, using browser developer tools, Shopify logs, and systematic troubleshooting methodologies to identify root causes.
Perform regular maintenance and updates including Shopify platform updates, theme updates, app updates, security patches, and code refactoring to maintain store health and security.
Provide technical support for store issues, answering questions from merchants, stakeholders, and team members about Shopify capabilities, limitations, and best implementation approaches.
Document technical solutions creating comprehensive documentation for custom developments, integration processes, troubleshooting guides, and maintenance procedures that enable knowledge transfer.
Team Collaboration
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including designers, project managers, marketers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions that achieve business objectives.
Participate in code reviews providing constructive feedback to other developers, sharing knowledge, and ensuring code quality standards are maintained across the team.
Mentor junior developers sharing Shopify expertise, eCommerce best practices, and technical skills that help grow the team's capabilities and maintain high development standards.
Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders, explaining limitations, trade-offs, timelines, and recommendations in clear, business-focused language.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Information Technology, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. We value both formal education and hands-on experience in Shopify development.
Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience with Shopify development and customization, including multiple complete store builds, theme development projects, and complex integrations. You should have a portfolio demonstrating diverse Shopify projects.
Previous work experience as a Shopify Developer with proven track record of delivering high-quality, pixel-perfect web projects within established timelines and budgets.
Technical Skills - Core Requirements
Expert proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript with deep understanding of modern web standards, semantic markup, responsive design principles, and cross-browser compatibility. You should write clean, maintainable code following industry best practices.
Advanced Liquid templating language expertise including filters, tags, objects, logic operators, and template architecture for Shopify theme development. You should be comfortable building complex theme logic and creating reusable components.
Strong understanding of front-end frameworks such as Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS, or similar, along with modern web development tools including npm, webpack, Gulp, and CSS preprocessors (Sass/SCSS).
Responsive design mastery with ability to create fluid layouts that adapt seamlessly across devices, implementing mobile-first approaches and ensuring excellent user experiences on all screen sizes.
Version control systems experience, especially Git, including branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows using platforms like GitHub or Bitbucket.
Shopify-Specific Expertise
Deep knowledge of Shopify platform architecture including theme structure, sections and blocks system, metafields, variants, collections, navigation, and core Shopify objects and their relationships.
Experience with Shopify Plus features for enterprise merchants, including advanced automation, custom checkout, wholesale channels, multistore management, and Shopify Scripts.
Proficiency with Shopify APIs including Admin API, Storefront API, Ajax API, and webhook implementations for building custom functionality and integrations.
Familiarity with Shopify app ecosystem including popular apps for marketing, inventory, customer service, reviews, and specialized functionality, with ability to evaluate and integrate appropriate solutions.
Understanding of Shopify CLI and Theme Kit for local development workflows, version control integration, and efficient theme deployment processes.
