Senior Rails full-stack developer coding remotely in modern home office workspace

 Company Overview

At Hubstaff, we're not just building software—we're revolutionising how distributed teams work together. Our mission is clear and compelling: empower people to have their most productive workday, every day. We achieve this through our industry-leading workforce analytics and time tracking platform that has become indispensable for remote and distributed teams worldwide.

We've been pioneers in remote work for over a decade, embracing distributed collaboration long before it became mainstream. While many companies scrambled to adapt to remote work in recent years, we've been perfecting it, building systems and culture that truly support asynchronous, location-independent productivity. We believe remote work represents the most significant transformation in the modern workplace since the personal computer revolutionized business operations.

Today, more than 95,000 businesses trust Hubstaff to track time, manage schedules, and automate payments with complete transparency and accountability. Our platform serves as the operational backbone for companies ranging from fast-growing startups to established enterprises, all united by their commitment to remote-first operations.

We're a product-led company characterised by a winning culture, strong market momentum, and an ambitious long-term vision: to become an essential component of every remote company's technology stack. Despite our success, we're just getting started on this journey, and that's where you come in.

The Role

We're actively seeking a Senior Rails Full-Stack Developer to join our accomplished engineering team. This is a full-time position requiring approximately 40 hours per week, offering complete location flexibility and genuine long-term career potential. You'll be instrumental in designing and scaling the systems that power our high-performance, globally distributed Software-as-a-Service platform that serves users across every timezone.

Your responsibilities will extend far beyond traditional backend development. You'll be deeply involved in extending and refining our custom design system built on Hotwire and Tailwind CSS, ensuring we maintain a consistent, scalable user interface foundation across our entire product ecosystem. This role offers the unique opportunity to influence both the technical architecture and user experience that millions of professionals interact with daily.

Collaboration sits at the heart of this position. You'll work closely with our Engineering Manager, talented frontend developers, and product stakeholders to shape technical direction and deliver elegant, performant experiences that solve real problems for distributed teams. Your voice will matter in technical discussions, architectural decisions, and product roadmap planning.

We value stability and deep product knowledge over transactional relationships. We're specifically looking for engineers who envision themselves growing alongside our product and team for years to come, not those seeking short-term contract opportunities. If you're excited about investing deeply in a product and watching your contributions compound over time, this role offers that rare opportunity.

What You'll Do

Your daily work will encompass the full spectrum of modern web application development. You'll design, build, and maintain services and features using Ruby on Rails, architecting scalable systems capable of handling massive datasets and high request volumes without compromising performance or reliability.

A significant portion of your work involves extending and evolving our custom design system built on Hotwire and Tailwind CSS. You'll support the creation of new components, establish patterns that other developers can follow, and ensure our interface meets modern accessibility standards. This isn't just about making things look good—it's about creating a scalable UI foundation that accelerates development across the organization.

You'll build, maintain, and integrate user-facing features leveraging Hotwire, Stimulus, and Turbo, with occasional strategic use of modern JavaScript frameworks when circumstances warrant. Your technical judgment will guide when to use our established patterns versus when to introduce new approaches.

Collaboration with the Engineering Manager and product team will shape your weekly priorities and influence our technical roadmap. Your experience and insights will directly impact what we build and how we build it.

Performance optimization represents an ongoing responsibility. You'll identify and resolve bottlenecks across database queries, application logic, and frontend rendering, ensuring Hubstaff remains responsive even as we scale to serve larger enterprises with increasingly complex requirements.

Background job processing using Sidekiq and Redis will be part of your toolkit for handling asynchronous operations efficiently. You'll write comprehensive automated tests using RSpec, system tests, and Stimulus/Hotwire test helpers to maintain code quality and prevent regressions.

Code reviews, documentation, and planning sessions round out your responsibilities. You'll balance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery, understanding that perfect is often the enemy of shipped.

What You Should Have

We're seeking candidates with substantial professional development experience—specifically 7+ years of professional development work, including at least 5+ years building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications. This depth of experience ensures you've encountered and solved the kinds of complex challenges that arise in mature, scaled applications.

Strong database skills with PostgreSQL or MySQL are essential. You should be comfortable optimizing queries, designing schemas, and understanding database performance characteristics at scale.

Experience with background job frameworks and asynchronous processing is required. You've implemented systems that handle time-intensive operations without blocking user interactions.

Your track record should demonstrate proven ability designing systems for scale, performance, and reliability. We need to see evidence that you've built applications that grew successfully over time.

Required: Proficiency in modern frontend development with Hotwire and Tailwind CSS, plus demonstrable experience with at least one major JavaScript framework such as React or Vue. We need developers comfortable across the entire stack, not just backend specialists.

Experience working asynchronously in fully remote teams is crucial. You should be self-directed, comfortable with written communication, and able to collaborate effectively across timezones without constant synchronous meetings.

Finally, we're looking for candidates with a history of multi-year tenure in recent roles. Job-hopping raises concerns about cultural fit and long-term commitment.

Nice to Have

While not required, several qualifications would make you an even stronger candidate. Experience with message queues like Kafka or RabbitMQ, or search engines such as Elasticsearch or Solr, demonstrates exposure to sophisticated distributed systems architecture.

Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud Platform indicates you understand modern deployment and infrastructure patterns. Performance tuning experience in high-traffic applications shows you've operated at significant scale.

A strong eye for design consistency and component-driven development would help you excel in our design system work, ensuring our interface remains cohesive as it evolves.

Location

We're currently hiring candidates based in Argentina, Brazil, Poland, Romania, Spain, Portugal, and Canada. These locations offer optimal timezone overlap with our distributed team while maintaining the cost structures that allow us to offer competitive compensation.

Compensation & Contract Type

This position operates as an independent contractor arrangement, which we prefer for its flexibility and simplicity across international borders. Compensation ranges from $45 to $60 USD per hour, translating to approximately $7,000 to $10,000 USD monthly for full-time commitment of roughly 40 hours per week. Your specific rate within this range will reflect your experience level, specialized skills, and the value you bring to our team.

Why You'll Love Working with Us

Our remote-first culture is built on trust, autonomy, and asynchronous collaboration. We don't micromanage or require constant availability. We judge contributions by results, not hours logged or responsiveness in Slack.

You'll work on technically challenging problems at meaningful scale, touching systems that serve tens of thousands of businesses. These aren't trivial features—they're complex, impactful solutions that require sophisticated engineering.

Our long-term product focus means you can build something you'll genuinely invest in over years, watching your contributions mature and evolve rather than jumping to the next project every few months.

We offer competitive compensation that recognizes and rewards top talent in the global marketplace.

Inclusion at Hubstaff

Hubstaff is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and remain committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members, regardless of background, identity, or lived experience. Our distributed nature means we inherently value diverse perspectives, and we actively work to ensure everyone feels welcomed and valued.
