The Role
As a Senior II Software Engineer Lead, you'll take ownership of designing and implementing mission-critical components for the Akamai Inference Cloud platform. This position demands a unique combination of deep technical expertise and leadership capabilities. You'll be responsible for building and optimizing systems that support OpenAI-compatible endpoints while managing complex inference workloads distributed across multiple regions worldwide.
Your role extends beyond writing code. You'll serve as a technical mentor to engineers across the team, guiding them through architectural decisions, code reviews, and complex technical challenges. Your influence will shape the technical direction of the platform, and your problem-solving abilities will be crucial in delivering scalable, high-quality solutions that meet the demands of enterprise AI deployments.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Architecture & Development You'll lead the design and implementation of core platform components, ensuring that every system you build meets the highest standards for performance, scalability, and reliability. Your work will directly impact how customers deploy and run AI inference workloads at global scale.
Technical Leadership Drive critical technical decisions within your domain, evaluating and selecting the most appropriate tools, frameworks, and architectural approaches for handling AI inference workloads. Your choices will influence the platform's evolution and capabilities.
Team Development Mentor and guide fellow engineers through comprehensive code reviews, thoughtful design discussions, and collaborative technical problem-solving sessions. Your leadership will help elevate the entire team's capabilities.
AI Workload Optimization: Implement and optimize containerized AI workloads with hardware-specific enhancements, integrating inference frameworks at enterprise scale. You'll work with cutting-edge GPU infrastructure and acceleration technologies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with teams across the organization to define technical requirements, establish platform standards, and maintain operational excellence across all systems.
What You'll Bring
Core Technical Skills We're looking for someone with extensive software engineering experience, particularly in distributed systems, cloud services, and platform engineering. Your background should demonstrate a strong foundation in building complex, production-grade systems.
AI/ML Expertise Hands-on experience with AI inference, model serving, or large language model (LLM) deployment is essential. You should have working knowledge of modern inference frameworks such as TensorRT, vLLM, TorchServe, or Triton Inference Server.
Cloud-Native Architecture Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures is crucial, including proficiency with containerization technologies and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes and Docker. You understand how to build systems that scale elastically and recover gracefully.
Platform Engineering Excellence Proven track record of building high-performance, scalable systems using modern DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code methodologies. You write code that's maintainable, testable, and production-ready.
Leadership & Mentorship Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring team members, advocating for code quality, and driving technical solutions for complex architectural challenges. You lead by example and inspire others to do their best work.
Operational Excellence Strong knowledge of observability tools, monitoring systems, and debugging techniques for distributed systems. You understand that building the system is only half the challenge—operating it reliably is equally important.
Hardware Acceleration Familiarity with GPU infrastructure and hardware acceleration technologies that power modern AI workloads.
