BAIN CAPABILITY NETWORK - YOUR PROFESSIONAL HOME

In 2004, Bain established its presence in the Indian market by opening the Bain Capability Center in New Delhi. Today, this operation has evolved into the Bain Capability Network (BCN), a globally distributed network of excellence with nodes across various geographies. BCN represents Bain's commitment to building world-class capabilities outside traditional consulting office locations, enabling us to deliver exceptional value to clients while creating outstanding career opportunities for professionals in key markets.

Expert Client Delivery (ECD) is an integral unit of BCN and plays a critical role in Bain's global success. ECD adds substantial value to Bain's case teams worldwide by supporting them with sophisticated analytics and research solutions across all industries. This support spans specific domains for corporate cases, client development, private equity diligence, and the development of Bain's proprietary intellectual property. Working within BCN means you're not just supporting projects—you're an essential part of how Bain delivers world-class consulting services globally.

THE OPPORTUNITY - PROJECT LEAD (DATA EXPERT) - RETAIL

We are seeking an accomplished Project Lead with deep expertise in data engineering to join our Retail Center of Expertise in New Delhi. This permanent full-time position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of advanced data engineering and strategic retail consulting. You'll build sophisticated data pipelines and ETL solutions that power Bain's proprietary retail products and analytics, directly influencing strategic decisions for some of the world's leading retail organizations.

In this role, you'll lead technical teams in developing data solutions that answer critical strategic questions for Bain's retail clients across category management, cost of goods sold optimization, pricing and promotion analytics, space optimization, and customer analytics. Your work will span diverse retail sectors including grocery, apparel, general merchandise, e-commerce, and B2B retail, providing exposure to the full spectrum of modern retail operations.

YOUR TEAM AND COLLABORATIVE ECOSYSTEM

The Retail Center of Expertise collaborates closely with Bain's global Retail Practice leadership, client-facing teams, and end clients on the development and delivery of Bain's proprietary retail products and solutions. This center serves as a technical and analytical powerhouse, combining deep retail domain knowledge with cutting-edge data engineering capabilities to solve complex business problems.

As a Project Lead within this team, you'll work alongside a diverse group of professionals including Directors, Managers, Project Leads, Associates, and Analysts. Project durations typically range from three weeks to six months, providing variety in your work while allowing you to see projects through from conception to delivery. The delivery models vary based on project needs—you might work as part of a broader global Bain case team, collaborate independently with a Bain Associate Partner or Partner, or engage directly with end clients to implement solutions.

This collaborative environment fosters knowledge sharing and continuous learning. You'll gain exposure to different aspects of retail business strategy while deepening your technical expertise in data engineering and analytics. The multidisciplinary nature of the work means you'll develop both your technical capabilities and your business acumen, making you uniquely valuable in the evolving landscape of data-driven retail transformation.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT AREAS

TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP AND DATA PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT

As the technical lead of your team, you'll spearhead the development of sophisticated product data and ETL pipelines within the retail domain. This involves architecting solutions that can handle the scale and complexity of modern retail data, spanning multiple channels, geographies, and product categories. Your pipelines will need to process diverse data types—from point-of-sale transactions and inventory data to customer behavior information and supply chain metrics.

You'll design solutions that are not only functional but also scalable, maintainable, and performant. This requires careful consideration of data architecture, processing patterns, and technology choices. Your technical decisions will directly impact the speed and reliability with which Bain's teams can generate insights for clients, making this responsibility both challenging and consequential.

DATABASE INTEGRATION AND OPTIMIZATION

A critical aspect of your role involves integrating with various databases and ensuring efficient, optimized database interactions. You'll work with both traditional relational databases and modern big data platforms, implementing ETL processing workflows and data warehousing solutions that enable effective analytics at scale. This requires deep understanding of database design principles, query optimization techniques, and data modeling best practices.

Your expertise will ensure that data is structured appropriately for analysis, that queries perform efficiently even on large datasets, and that data quality remains high throughout the pipeline. You'll need to balance competing concerns—speed versus accuracy, flexibility versus structure, real-time processing versus batch operations—making thoughtful trade-offs that serve business needs.

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

Writing reusable and sustainable code is a cornerstone of this position. You'll follow and help establish best practices and coding standards that ensure the solutions you build can be maintained, extended, and evolved over time. This involves not just writing code that works, but code that other engineers can understand, modify, and build upon.

When issues arise, you'll troubleshoot, debug, and resolve software defects and problems promptly. Your ability to quickly diagnose and fix issues will be essential to maintaining project momentum and meeting client expectations. This requires both technical depth and systematic problem-solving skills.

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION AND FEATURE DEVELOPMENT

You'll collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features. This means working with business analysts who understand client needs, data scientists who develop analytical models, consultants who shape strategic recommendations, and other engineers who implement complementary functionality. Your ability to communicate effectively across these different roles will be crucial to project success.

This collaboration requires understanding multiple perspectives—what's technically feasible, what's analytically valuable, what's strategically important, and what's practically implementable within project constraints. Navigating these different viewpoints to find optimal solutions is a key skill you'll exercise regularly.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND PROCESS IMPROVEMENT

The data engineering landscape evolves rapidly, with new tools, frameworks, and best practices emerging regularly. You'll stay informed about industry trends and consistently enhance development processes to incorporate valuable innovations. This might involve evaluating new technologies, conducting proof-of-concepts, or advocating for process changes that improve team efficiency or solution quality.

Your role includes contributing to the broader organizational capability by sharing knowledge, documenting learnings, and helping establish standards that benefit multiple teams and projects.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTRIBUTION

Beyond technical delivery, you'll assist in recruiting, marketing, and training activities. This might involve participating in hiring processes to identify strong candidates, representing BCN in external forums to build the employer brand, or conducting training sessions to help team members develop new skills. These activities strengthen the organization and help build the next generation of technical leaders.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field is preferred, though equivalent practical experience may be considered. The role requires five to eight years of relevant experience in backend engineering with a heavy focus on data, including creating data pipelines or working in similar data-intensive roles.

Your experience should demonstrate not just coding ability, but the capacity to design solutions and draft technical architectures. You should have a track record of building systems that solve real business problems, not just implementing specifications handed down by others.

CORE TECHNICAL SKILLS

Programming and Development: You must possess strong proficiency in programming languages essential for data engineering, particularly Python and SQL. Your Python skills should extend beyond basic scripting to include writing production-quality code, while your SQL expertise should encompass complex queries, performance optimization, and database design.

Big Data and Cloud Platforms: Proficiency in designing and architecting scalable big data solutions is essential. This includes hands-on experience with platforms like Hadoop and Snowflake, understanding their strengths and appropriate use cases. You should have practical experience with distributed computing, parallel processing, and cluster management—concepts that are fundamental to working with data at scale.

Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is required. You should be comfortable deploying and managing data infrastructure in cloud environments, leveraging managed services where appropriate, and optimizing for both cost and performance.

Data Engineering Fundamentals: Working knowledge of data mining using ETL processes and data warehouse concepts is essential. You should understand different ETL patterns, know when to use each, and be able to implement them efficiently. Solid understanding of relational databases, including hands-on experience in database design and optimization, forms the foundation of your data engineering practice.

Version Control and Collaboration Tools: Expert knowledge of version control systems like BitBucket or Github is required. You should be comfortable with branching strategies, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows that enable teams to work effectively together.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

GenAI Integration: Strong hands-on experience integrating generative AI-based applications with frontend systems is increasingly important. As AI capabilities become central to analytics products, your ability to effectively expose these capabilities through well-designed interfaces will be valuable.

Backend Frameworks: Knowledge of backend frameworks like FastAPI (preferred), Flask, Django, or ExpressJS is beneficial. These frameworks enable you to build APIs that expose data and analytical functionality to various consumers.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

Technical Problem-Solving: You must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within teams. Data engineering often involves debugging complex issues that span multiple systems, requiring systematic thinking and persistence.

Performance Under Pressure: The ability to work in fast-paced environments and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines is essential. Client projects often have firm timelines, and your ability to maintain quality while moving quickly will be tested regularly.

Communication and Stakeholder Management: Strong communication skills are critical. You must be able to drive discussions and deliver presentations to senior stakeholders and client teams, explaining technical concepts in ways that resonate with business audiences. Your ability to bridge the technical-business divide will significantly impact your effectiveness.

DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE (PREFERRED)

While not mandatory, knowledge of key data sources and metrics in the retail industry is highly valuable. Experience in one or more sub-sectors within retail—such as grocery, apparel, general merchandise, e-commerce, or B2B retail—will accelerate your ability to contribute meaningfully to projects and understand the business context of your technical work.

You'll gain exposure to diverse retail challenges across multiple sub-sectors and geographies, building expertise that is highly sought after in the market. The combination of technical depth and business context you'll develop positions you for leadership roles in data engineering, analytics, or consulting.

Working within BCN provides unique advantages—you'll have the stability and support of working in New Delhi while engaging with global teams and clients. You'll see the direct impact of your work on strategic decisions made by leading retail organizations worldwide, providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment that's rare in purely technical roles.
