Your Impact and Responsibilities
Technical Development and Architecture
At the core of your role, you will be the architect and builder of our backend infrastructure. You'll design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that form the backbone of our applications. This involves building and optimizing database schemas and data models that efficiently handle our data needs while ensuring performance remains optimal even as our systems grow.
Your code will set the standard for the team. You'll write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code that follows established team standards and industry best practices. Every line you write will be purposeful, documented, and designed with future maintainability in mind. You'll actively participate in code reviews, not just as a reviewer but as a mentor, providing constructive feedback that helps elevate the entire team's technical capabilities.
When production issues arise—and they inevitably will—you'll be the problem-solver who debugs complex scenarios and implements robust solutions that address root causes rather than symptoms. Your contributions to technical documentation and architecture decisions will help shape the future direction of our technology stack.
You'll design and implement both RESTful APIs and GraphQL endpoints, understanding when each approach is most appropriate and executing implementations that are intuitive, performant, and well-documented. Performance optimization will be second nature to you—whether that means fine-tuning database queries, implementing intelligent caching strategies, or designing asynchronous processing systems that handle workloads efficiently.
Your participation in agile ceremonies and technical planning sessions will ensure that technical perspectives are well-represented in product decisions, and that the team maintains alignment between business objectives and technical feasibility.
Collaboration and Innovation
Software development is fundamentally a team sport, and you'll be an active participant within an autonomous mission team that includes Product Managers, Designers, Engineering Managers, and Frontend Engineers. Your role extends beyond writing code to actively contributing to discussions that clarify priorities and user needs, ensuring that technical solutions align with user expectations and business goals.
You'll contribute meaningfully to technical discussions and architecture decisions, bringing your experience and expertise to bear on challenges ranging from system design to technology selection. Collaboration with frontend engineers will be essential as you work together to define API contracts and data structures that create seamless integration between frontend and backend systems.
Your participation in squad rituals and team meetings will help maintain team cohesion and ensure everyone stays aligned on priorities and progress. You'll handle support requests and bug fixes within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs), recognizing that maintaining existing systems is just as important as building new features.
Quality and Best Practices
Quality isn't an afterthought in your development process—it's woven into everything you do. You'll write comprehensive unit tests and integration tests following Test-Driven Development (TDD) principles, ensuring that code is validated before it reaches production. Collaboration with the QA team will ensure comprehensive test coverage across all aspects of the application.
Pair programming sessions with team members will be opportunities for knowledge sharing, problem-solving, and building collective ownership of the codebase. You'll monitor application performance and scalability continuously, proactively identifying areas for improvement before they become critical issues.
Security will be top of mind in everything you build. You'll follow security best practices religiously and address vulnerabilities proactively, understanding that security is not a feature to be added later but a fundamental requirement from day one. Your contributions to continuous integration and deployment processes will help the team ship code faster and more reliably.
You'll implement comprehensive logging, monitoring, and alerting systems that provide visibility into system behavior and enable rapid response when issues arise. Ensuring data integrity and implementing robust backup strategies will be part of your responsibility for maintaining the reliability and resilience of our systems.
The Ideal Candidate Profile
Required Experience and Expertise
We're looking for someone with at least 7 years of professional software development experience specifically in backend development. This isn't just about years on a resume—it's about the depth of expertise you've gained through building, maintaining, and optimizing backend systems in production environments.
You should have strong expertise in backend technologies and system architecture, with a proven track record of building scalable systems that handle real-world complexity. Your experience should demonstrate not just technical proficiency but also good judgment in making architectural decisions that balance competing concerns like performance, maintainability, and time-to-market.
Technical Skills and Competencies
Your technical toolkit should be comprehensive and battle-tested. You should be comfortable with server-side technologies such as Elixir, Node.js, Ruby, Python, Java, or similar languages. Experience with database systems including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, and others is essential—you should understand not just how to use these systems but when each is most appropriate.
You have deep experience with RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL, understanding the trade-offs between different API design approaches. Microservices architecture and distributed systems should be familiar territory—you've dealt with the challenges of service communication, data consistency, and distributed transactions.
Experience with message queues and event-driven architectures using tools like RabbitMQ or Kafka demonstrates your ability to build asynchronous, scalable systems. Your proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git, goes beyond basic commits to include branching strategies, merge conflict resolution, and collaborative workflows.
Testing is in your DNA—you're experienced with testing frameworks and methodologies spanning unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests. CI/CD practices and deployment automation are part of your standard workflow, and you've worked extensively with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes are tools you use regularly to build portable, scalable applications. You practice software craftsmanship, taking pride in writing code that is not just functional but elegant, maintainable, and well-structured.
