About the Record to Report (R2R) Department

The Record to Report (R2R) Department is a global organization of over 650 experienced finance professionals working together to deliver financial services and solutions for Roche across the EMEA region. Our comprehensive services cover financial management, period-end closing, capital and lease accounting, credit and receivables, manufacturing finance, and divisional reporting.

We ensure compliance for 263 reporting entities in 96 countries with international accounting standards (IFRS, GAAP) and provide assurance of financial integrity across Roche's operations. As part of this dynamic team, you'll contribute to maintaining the highest standards of financial accuracy and regulatory compliance while supporting Roche's mission to improve global healthcare outcomes.

The Position: Senior Financial Accountant - Fixed Asset Focus

Important Note: This role offers a fixed-term contract extending until February 28, 2029.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically proficient Senior Financial Accountant specialising in Fixed Assets to join our Budapest-based R2R team. This critical role focuses on managing the complete lifecycle of fixed asset accounting, capital expenditure (CAPEX) tracking, and lease accounting while ensuring full compliance with international financial reporting standards.

As a Senior Financial Accountant with fixed asset specialisation, you will perform day-to-day and period-end closing activities according to predefined deadlines with full ownership of your tasks and in strict compliance with process documentation governing fixed asset accounting. Your expertise in fixed asset management, CAPEX accounting, and lease accounting under IFRS 16 will be instrumental in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting strategic business decisions.

This position offers the unique opportunity to work within a global finance organisation while maintaining close collaboration with local country finance teams. You'll closely align on priorities with the Country Chief Accountant, propose innovative process and system improvements, and contribute to the continuous enhancement of our financial operations. Your role bridges technical accounting expertise with collaborative teamwork, requiring both independent ownership and effective cross-functional partnership.

Based in Budapest with a flexible hybrid work model averaging two office days per week, this position provides an excellent balance between collaborative in-person work and productive remote flexibility. You'll be part of a diverse, inclusive team that values personal expression and professional growth while delivering world-class financial services to a global healthcare leader.

Core Responsibilities

Fixed Asset and CAPEX Accounting Management

At the heart of this role lies comprehensive management of fixed asset accounting operations. You'll maintain accurate fixed asset registers, tracking assets from acquisition through disposal, ensuring proper capitalization thresholds and classification, calculating and posting depreciation using appropriate methods, managing asset transfers between cost centers and locations, and processing asset retirements and disposals with proper gain/loss recognition.

Your CAPEX accounting responsibilities include monitoring and tracking capital expenditure projects from initiation to completion, reviewing capital project budgets and actual spend, ensuring proper capitalization of qualifying costs, coordinating with project managers on asset readiness dates, facilitating timely asset transfers from construction-in-progress to operational assets, and providing CAPEX reporting and analysis to support business decisions.

Working with the SAP Fixed Assets (FA) module or equivalent enterprise systems, you'll configure asset master data accurately, execute mass asset transactions efficiently, generate fixed asset reports for internal and external stakeholders, perform system reconciliations to ensure data integrity, and troubleshoot system issues in collaboration with IT teams.

Lease Accounting and IFRS 16 Compliance

Managing leased asset accounting under IFRS 16 represents a crucial responsibility requiring deep technical knowledge. You'll identify and evaluate lease contracts to determine accounting treatment, calculate right-of-use assets and lease liabilities using appropriate discount rates, record initial lease recognition entries and ongoing remeasurement adjustments, maintain comprehensive lease schedules tracking all lease obligations, perform lease modifications and reassessments as circumstances change, and ensure full compliance with IFRS 16 disclosure requirements.

Your lease accounting work includes coordinating with legal and procurement teams to obtain lease documentation, analyzing lease terms to identify embedded leases and variable payments, calculating incremental borrowing rates for lease liability measurement, reconciling lease accounting balances to supporting documentation, and preparing lease-related notes for financial statement disclosures.

Staying current with evolving lease accounting guidance ensures your technical knowledge remains sharp. You'll monitor IFRS Interpretations Committee decisions affecting lease accounting, attend training on lease accounting updates and best practices, participate in internal working groups addressing complex lease scenarios, and share knowledge with colleagues to build team capabilities.

Period-End Closing and Financial Reporting

Executing accurate and timely period-end closing activities according to established deadlines ensures financial statements meet quality standards. Your closing responsibilities include posting depreciation and amortization entries, recording asset acquisitions and disposals, reconciling fixed asset subledgers to general ledger, preparing consolidation reporting packages, analyzing variances and investigating anomalies, and supporting month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.

Consolidation reporting activities you'll perform include preparing fixed asset rollforward schedules showing opening balances, additions, disposals, depreciation, and closing balances, completing standardized reporting templates for group consolidation, ensuring elimination entries are properly documented and posted, providing commentary on significant fixed asset movements, and meeting strict reporting deadlines to support consolidated financial statement preparation.

Your analytical skills will be essential in identifying trends and unusual items, investigating discrepancies and resolving issues, preparing variance explanations for management review, conducting asset impairment assessments when indicators exist, and recommending corrective actions for process improvements.

System Reconciliations and Data Integrity

Maintaining accurate system reconciliations ensures the integrity of fixed asset data across multiple systems. You'll reconcile fixed asset subledgers to general ledger balances, verify inventory management system data against asset records, confirm project system capitalizations match asset register additions, cross-check depreciation calculations between systems, and document reconciliation results with supporting evidence.

Your reconciliation work identifies and resolves discrepancies promptly, investigates root causes of data inconsistencies, implements control procedures to prevent recurrence, maintains detailed reconciliation workpapers for audit trails, and reports significant reconciling items to management.

Data quality initiatives you'll drive include performing regular data cleansing exercises to maintain accurate master data, identifying and correcting duplicate or obsolete asset records, standardizing asset descriptions and classifications, validating cost center assignments and locations, and implementing data quality metrics and monitoring dashboards.

Audit Preparation and Support

Preparing for and participating in internal and external audits represents a critical responsibility. You'll gather supporting documentation for fixed asset balances and transactions, prepare audit schedules and lead sheets as requested, respond to auditor inquiries with clear explanations and evidence, facilitate auditor testing by providing requested samples, address audit findings and implement remediation plans, and maintain organized documentation that facilitates efficient audits.

Your audit support includes understanding audit risk areas related to fixed assets, preparing self-assessment documentation demonstrating control effectiveness, coordinating with internal audit teams on control testing, implementing recommendations from previous audit cycles, and continuously strengthening internal controls over fixed asset processes.

Building strong relationships with auditors through professionalism, responsiveness, and transparency ensures smooth audit processes. You'll anticipate auditor needs based on prior experience, proactively address potential questions or concerns, communicate status updates on outstanding requests, and leverage audit feedback for continuous improvement.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication

Collaborating across functions and countries to enhance teamwork and deliver results characterizes the collaborative nature of this role. You'll support colleagues by sharing knowledge and best practices, managing communications with Roche Affiliates across EMEA, coordinating with non-financial teams including procurement, project management, and facilities, engaging with third-party service providers and vendors, and facilitating effective handoffs between teams and geographies.

Your communication responsibilities include explaining complex accounting concepts to non-financial stakeholders, preparing clear documentation and process instructions, conducting training sessions on fixed asset accounting procedures, participating in cross-functional project teams, and building effective working relationships across organizational boundaries.

Effective stakeholder management ensures alignment and timely delivery. You'll understand stakeholder priorities and expectations, provide regular status updates on key activities and initiatives, escalate issues appropriately when resolution requires senior involvement, manage competing priorities through clear communication, and demonstrate responsiveness to stakeholder needs.

Alignment with Country Chief Accountant

Closely aligning with the Country Chief Accountant ensures your work supports country-level priorities and strategic objectives. You'll participate in regular check-ins to discuss priorities and challenges, provide status updates on key deliverables and projects, seek guidance on complex accounting issues or interpretations, propose process improvements based on operational insights, and support country finance initiatives and special projects.

Your strategic partnership with the Country Chief Accountant includes understanding country-specific regulatory requirements, aligning local practices with global standards and policies, contributing to country finance strategy and planning, representing fixed assets perspective in country finance discussions, and supporting leadership decisions with data-driven analysis and recommendations.

Process and System Improvement Initiatives

Contributing to the continuous improvement of the Local Finance Team and Roche-Budapest represents an ongoing commitment. You'll identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks in current processes, propose automation opportunities to reduce manual effort, recommend system enhancements to improve functionality, share best practices from other Roche entities, and participate in process improvement projects and working groups.

Your improvement mindset drives innovation in fixed asset accounting operations. You'll challenge existing processes with "why do we do it this way?" questioning, benchmark against external best practices and industry standards, pilot new approaches and measure results, document process improvements and share lessons learned, and recognize and celebrate successful improvements.

Leveraging technology to enhance efficiency includes exploring RPA (Robotic Process Automation) opportunities, implementing workflow automation tools, utilizing data analytics for insights, developing self-service reporting capabilities, and adopting digital collaboration platforms.

Flexible Assignment Management

Flexibly handling various assignments, including cross-functional and cross-geographic tasks as business needs evolve, demonstrates your adaptability and versatility. You'll take on special projects outside normal responsibilities, provide backup coverage for colleagues during absences, support system implementations or upgrades, participate in harmonization initiatives across countries, and contribute to ad-hoc analyses and reporting requests.

Your flexibility extends to adapting work schedules to accommodate global teams across time zones, learning new processes or systems as business evolves, stepping into new roles or responsibilities as opportunities arise, supporting surge capacity during peak periods, and maintaining positive attitude when priorities shift unexpectedly.
