The Opportunity
Wise is opening a brand-new office in Hyderabad that will be at the heart of product development for the company. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to be part of the founding product engineering team in one of Wise's most strategic markets.
We're seeking a tenured Full Stack Engineer at the IC4 level to join our very first product team in Hyderabad, which will play a critical role in Wise's Asia & Pacific regional expansion. This isn't just another engineering role—it's a chance to shape the foundation of how millions of Indian customers will experience Wise's revolutionary cross-border payment services.
APAC customers are strong contributors to Wise's growth, and India plays a crucial part in this success. A significant portion of this growth comes from new customer acquisitions, making fast, convenient, and delightful customer onboarding journeys and seamless money movement absolutely central to our expansion strategy. That's the mission of the India Product team, and we're looking for exceptional engineers who can make this happen.
If building scalable fintech systems, disrupting the cross-border payments industry dominated by traditional banks, and being part of a founding team sounds like an exciting challenge, we'd love to hear from you.
Core Responsibilities
Product Development for the Indian Market
You'll develop Wise's products specifically tailored for customers in the Indian market, directly contributing to disrupting the cross-border payments industry that is currently dominated by traditional banks. Your work will make international money transfers more accessible, affordable, and transparent for millions of Indian customers and businesses.
This involves understanding the unique characteristics of the Indian market—customer behaviors, payment preferences, regulatory requirements, and competitive landscape—then translating these insights into product features and technical solutions that deliver exceptional customer experiences.
Customer Onboarding Solutions
You'll design and build onboarding solutions specifically tailored to the Indian market by leveraging the local KYC (Know Your Customer) stack and understanding the nuances of India's identity verification ecosystem. This includes integrating with Aadhaar, PAN, and other local identity verification systems to create seamless onboarding experiences.
Your focus will be developing robust systems that onboard customers without delays while maintaining complete compliance with local regulations including RBI guidelines, FEMA requirements, and anti-money laundering protocols. You'll balance speed and convenience with regulatory compliance and risk management—a critical balance in the highly regulated fintech space.
The onboarding experience you build will be the first impression millions of customers have of Wise, so excellence in user experience, performance, and reliability is essential.
Money Movement Systems Development
You'll develop scalable money movement systems that bring the speed and convenience of domestic payment processing to cross-border payments. This involves building integrations with India's payment infrastructure including UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, and emerging payment rails.
Your systems will handle millions of transactions, requiring robust architecture, careful attention to data consistency, comprehensive error handling, and intelligent retry mechanisms. You'll build solutions that process customer payments and data in scalable and cost-efficient ways, optimizing for both operational excellence and customer experience.
Money movement is at the core of Wise's value proposition, so your work directly impacts how customers perceive our service quality, reliability, and speed.
Technical Excellence and Leadership
As an IC4 engineer, you'll consistently work toward technical excellence within the team. This means writing clean, maintainable code, conducting thorough code reviews, establishing engineering best practices, and mentoring other engineers.
You'll lead large-scale projects that require heavy collaboration with teams across Wise globally, delivering solutions that have impact beyond your immediate team. Your technical leadership influences architectural decisions, technology choices, and engineering culture within the India office.
Automation and Tooling
You'll build and maintain automations and tooling that enable efficient operations at scale. This includes developing internal tools for operations teams, creating automated testing frameworks, implementing deployment pipelines, and building monitoring and alerting systems.
Your automation work reduces manual effort, minimizes human error, improves operational efficiency, and allows the team to scale without proportional increases in operational overhead.
Observability and Analytics
You'll utilize the observability stack and analytics to identify gaps, unlock new opportunities for growth, and drive operational excellence. This involves implementing comprehensive logging, metrics collection, distributed tracing, and building dashboards that provide visibility into system health and business metrics.
Your analytical work helps the team understand system behavior, identify performance bottlenecks, detect anomalies early, and make data-driven decisions about technical and product priorities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
You'll collaborate with various stakeholders throughout Wise—including Product Managers, Designers, Operations teams, Compliance, Legal, and other engineering teams globally. You'll plan and contribute to both product and technical roadmaps, ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical execution.
Your ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and understand business requirements in technical terms is crucial for success in this role.
Strategic Technical Contributions
Beyond day-to-day development, you'll contribute strategically to technical architecture, technology stack decisions, and engineering processes. As part of the founding team, your early decisions will establish patterns and practices that scale as the team grows.
You'll balance moving quickly to deliver customer value with building sustainable systems that won't require complete rewrites as the product matures. Your engineering judgment is critical to achieving this balance.
Required Qualifications
Technical Expertise
You're a tenured full-stack engineer with deep expertise across the entire technology stack. You're comfortable working with backend systems built in Java, Kotlin, or similar JVM languages, and frontend applications using React, TypeScript, or modern JavaScript frameworks.
You have strong foundations in computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, system design, and distributed systems. You understand database design, API design, asynchronous processing, event-driven architectures, and microservices patterns.
Experience Level
As an IC4 engineer, you bring significant experience building and operating production systems at scale. You've worked on complex technical problems, led technical initiatives, and delivered projects that required coordinating multiple teams and dependencies.
You have experience with the full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering through deployment and operations. You understand what it takes to build reliable, secure, and performant systems that serve real users.
Fintech and Payments Knowledge
While not strictly required, experience in fintech, payments, or financial services is highly valuable. Understanding payment processing flows, settlement cycles, reconciliation, fraud detection, and regulatory compliance requirements accelerates your impact in this role.
Familiarity with India's payment ecosystem—UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS—and regulatory landscape provides significant advantage.
Problem-Solving and Ownership
You're a strong problem solver who takes ownership of challenges from identification through resolution. You don't just identify problems—you propose solutions, build consensus, and drive implementation.
You're comfortable working with ambiguity, breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces, and making pragmatic technical decisions that balance competing concerns like speed, quality, scalability, and maintainability.
Collaboration and Communication
You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. You write clear documentation, explain technical decisions, give and receive constructive feedback, and collaborate productively with diverse teams across time zones and cultures.
You're a team player who contributes to positive team culture, shares knowledge generously, and helps others succeed.
Quality and Craftsmanship
You care deeply about code quality, system reliability, and user experience. You write tests, consider edge cases, handle errors gracefully, and think about operational concerns like monitoring, logging, and debugging.
You balance perfectionism with pragmatism, knowing when to invest in quality and when to move quickly and iterate.
Learning and Growth Mindset
You're committed to continuous learning and staying current with technology trends, tools, and best practices. You're curious, ask questions, experiment with new approaches, and help the team evolve its practices.
You're excited about working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift, requirements evolve, and learning happens continuously.
