Shell Market Risk specialists analyzing energy trading portfolios and risk metrics in modern Bangalore office

 About This Opportunity

Shell is seeking an exceptional Senior Specialist - Market Risk to join our specialized Finance Operations team in either Bangalore or Chennai. This is a pivotal role within our Market Risk department, where you'll be at the forefront of managing and analyzing risk exposure for Shell Energy Americas' (SEAM) trading portfolios spanning North America and Brazil.

As global energy markets evolve and Shell continues pioneering the transition to cleaner energy solutions, this role offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge risk management systems, sophisticated analytical tools, and complex energy trading portfolios covering Gas, Electricity, and New Energies businesses.

About the Market Risk Department

The Market Risk (MR) department represents a specialized center of excellence within Shell's Finance Operations, operating across our Bangalore, Chennai, and Manila centers. Our team holds frontline responsibility for critical functions including:

  • Risk Measurement & Quantification: Detecting and measuring potential unforeseen risks within trading activities
  • Deal Valuation: Ensuring accurate pricing and valuation of complex energy trading instruments
  • Exposure Reporting: Providing comprehensive risk exposure analysis to senior management and trading desks
  • Price Validation: Maintaining accuracy and integrity of commodity price data

Over the past eight years, our department has continuously evolved, absorbing newly migrated activities and increasingly complex work streams. This growth trajectory continues as Shell expands its energy trading operations globally, making this an exciting time to join our team.

The SEAM Portfolio - Your Primary Focus

You'll be working specifically with the Shell Energy Americas (SEAM) team, managing risk reporting for one of Shell's most dynamic trading portfolios. The SEAM business encompasses:

  • Gas Trading: Natural gas portfolio management across North American markets
  • Power Trading: Electricity trading operations spanning multiple power markets
  • New Energies: Emerging renewable energy trading activities
  • Geographic Scope: Operations across United States and Brazil markets

The portfolio has experienced significant growth, notably following the ERM acquisition in 2019, with continued expansion expected. This creates an environment where you'll constantly engage with new challenges, evolving market dynamics, and increasingly sophisticated trading strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Risk Management & Reporting

As a Senior Specialist, you'll execute comprehensive daily activities that form the backbone of our risk management framework:

Portfolio Analysis & P&L Reporting: Conduct detailed profit and loss analysis, understanding key P&L drivers and articulating strategy-based commentary that demonstrates commercial acumen. You'll translate complex trading results into clear insights for senior management consumption.

Risk Modeling & Quantification: Leverage sophisticated Market Risk modeling practices including Value at Risk (VaR) and Stress Testing methodologies to quantify and communicate portfolio risk. You'll need to understand how different market scenarios impact our positions and effectively communicate these risks to stakeholders.

Exposure Monitoring & Compliance: Monitor trading exposures daily within our Trading Control Framework and Manual of Authorities (MOA), ensuring all activities comply with established limits and regulatory requirements including SOX and Financial Reporting standards.

Technical Analysis & System Management

Database Query & Analysis: Provide ad-hoc analysis by running complex queries into Trading Risk databases, extracting meaningful insights from vast amounts of trading data stored across multiple Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) systems.

Performance Metrics Reporting: Monitor and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for both external stakeholders (traders, commercial teams) and internal performance benchmarks, ensuring transparency and accountability.

System Issue Resolution: Liaise with business users and technical support teams to identify, analyze, and resolve application issues, maintaining system integrity and operational continuity.

Strategic Projects & Continuous Improvement

Project Leadership: Work closely with Senior Specialists to execute projects, many with short delivery timelines. When business needs arise, you'll be expected to lead initiatives independently, demonstrating project management capabilities alongside technical expertise.

Process Enhancement: Explore opportunities to continuously improve tools, processes, and reporting mechanisms. Your fresh perspective and analytical mindset will help identify automation opportunities and efficiency gains.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Accounting, Finance, Operations, and Commercial teams to ensure deals are captured accurately and reflected correctly across our systems, maintaining data integrity throughout the transaction lifecycle.
